Motorcyclist Critically Injured After DUI Suspect Runs Red Light, Hits Him in Oceanside

Oceanside, California: A 23-year-old man is fighting for his life at a hospital after being struck by a DUI suspect while riding his motorcycle Monday evening in Oceanside.

Police said on the fateful day, the man, identified as Nick Cardenas, was on his motorcycle headed to his Bonsall home when the accident occurred.

The collision happened near Highway 76 and Benet Road, where authorities said a driver of a car ran a red light and hit Cardenas’ motorcycle.

Cardenas was thrown off the bike, and his helmet flew off after the impact.

The motorcyclist sustained broken bones and brain trauma. Emergency personnel rushed him to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police identified the driver of the car as 67-year-old Robert Shuey of San Clemente. The motorist was treated for his injuries and later arrested on suspicion of DUI. The suspect was reportedly found unresponsive in his cell the following day and was pronounced dead.

Cardenas is a young father of a 3-year-old girl. Family and friends have set up a Gofundme campaign to help them raise medical and other expenses.
