Pasadena, California: One person died, and two others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Wednesday night near Pasadena, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities said around 11:45 p.m., a piece of concrete, described as “about the size of a bowling ball,” came up from the freeway, and vehicles drove over the concrete debris, causing oil pans to rupture and create an oil slick approximately half a mile long on the freeway.

The slick resulted in a number of traffic collisions.

CHP officers responded to the scene, where three to four semi-trucks, including a UPS truck and several passenger cars, were involved in the accident.

One person died at a local hospital from injuries suffered in the crash. Two others were taken to hospitals by the Pasadena Fire Department with minor injuries.

Investigators closed all westbound lanes of the freeway following the crash. Traffic was being diverted off at Rosemead Boulevard.
