2 Die in Motorcycle Versus Car Crash in Mission Bay

San Diego, California: Two people died in a traffic collision involving a motorcycle that happened Thursday morning in the Mission Bay area, authorities reported.

The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. near Quivira Avenue and West Mission Bay Drive.

San Diego police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department responded to the scene.

Police officers determined that a 34-year-old motorcyclist was traveling over 100 mph, driving in the bike lane to avoid other vehicles, when the bike collided with a Toyota Prius turning right on a green light.

The rider was thrown from the bike onto the roadway. Firefighters pronounced the rider dead at the scene.

The Prius was occupied by five family members, including a 39-year-old woman sitting in the front passenger seat and children of ages ranging from infant to teenage.

The 39-year-old woman died from her injuries at a hospital. The other occupants were also hospitalized with varying injuries. The infant suffered injuries not considered serious.

Police are still investigating the collision.
