2 Hospitalized After Police Pursuit Ends in Crash in San Diego

San Diego, California: Two people were injured when a driver being pursued by police collided with several cars Wednesday night at an intersection in San Diego.

The collision happened at Convoy Street and Balboa Avenue.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident started when a deputy from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station spotted a black Ford 150 pickup truck driving at high speeds. The deputy believed the driver was possibly intoxicated and initiated a traffic stop.

The truck driver failed to yield, and the deputy started a chase.

The chase happened on surface streets before the truck driver entered the eastbound 52 Freeway.

When the driver reached the intersection of Convoy Street and Balboa Avenue, his truck collided with several other vehicles. Police said the suspect committed several other traffic violations during the pursuit.

The truck driver, identified as 32-year-old Samuel Laguna, was arrested at the scene.

Emergency personnel responded and evaluated the occupants of the other cars at the scene for their injuries. Two were taken to a local hospital for further treatment of minor injuries.

Laguna was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. He was later booked into jail. He was expected to face charges of suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol with injury, driving under the influence while on DUI probation, and felony evading.
