2 Injured in Lewiston Car Accident on State Route 299
Trinity County, California: Two people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Tuesday afternoon at a construction zone near Lewiston.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on State Route 299 just west of Fawn Lodge Road.
Authorities said that just before the crash, three vehicles, a 2007 Jeep, a 2021 Chevrolet, and a 2011 Mitsubishi, were stopped in a Caltrans construction zone, with the Jeep at the rear of the line of traffic.
At the same time, Joshua Short, 41, of Weaverville, was driving a 2003 Ford F-350 west on SR-299, approaching the stopped traffic.
Authorities said Short noticed the traffic stopped ahead of him and applied brakes but did not stop in time.
Short’s Ford crashed into the rear of the Jeep, pushing it into the Mitsubishi, which then was pushed into the Chevrolet.
The Mitsubishi continued southwest into the embankment and collided with several trees.
The driver of the Jeep, Rebecca Helsley, of Weaverville, suffered major injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, Nancy Rich, of Cottonwood, was also taken to the same facility with minor injuries.
The Chevrolet driver, Nicole Ross, of Lewiston, and Short were evacuated by paramedics at the scene but were not hospitalized.
Investigators said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors.
