2 Killed in Highway 1 Crash in Castroville

Castroville, California: Two people died in a multi-vehicle accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Highway 1 in Castroville, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The wreck happened at around 12:37 p.m. south of Molera Road.

Police officers said a blue Mazda SUV and a black GMC truck collided first and caused at least two other cars behind the Mazda to crash.

The Mazda was traveling south on the highway, and the truck was heading north when it veered into the southbound lane, and the two vehicles collided head-on.

Two occupants in the Mazda died in the accident.

No word was given about the condition of the other persons involved.

Caltrans District 5 shut down southbound Highway 1 near Molera Road following the crash. Traffic on the northbound side was slow as motorists approached the collision scene. All lanes were reopened when investigators cleared the scene.

CHP is investigating the collision.
