2 Workers Critically Injured in Mine Shaft Explosion in Placer County

Placer County, California: Two people were critically hurt in an explosion that happened Friday morning in a mine shaft in Placer County.

Authorities said the explosion happened around 9:40 a.m. at the mine located along Mosquito Ridge Road near Gorman Ranch Road within Tahoe National Forest.

The Forest Fire District, Cal Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the scene.

The emergency responders found two critically injured persons who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion.

Paramedics treated the victims at the scene and then took them to a nearby landing zone, from where they were airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

An investigation suggested that tools used in the mine “may have created static electricity, which caused nearby explosives to ignite.”

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration took over the investigation.
