3 Injured, Including Sheriff’s Deputy in Petaluma DUI Crash

Petaluma, California: A Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy was among three injured when a DUI suspect crashed into a patrol vehicle early Monday morning in Petaluma.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision occurred just after 2 a.m. on southbound Lakeville Highway, just south of Cannon Lane.

Authorities said a deputy in a Dodge Charger pulled over a man driving a Mercedes-Benz 1350.

The patrol car’s lights were activated, and both the deputy and the driver of the Mercedes were inside their vehicles and wearing their seatbelts.

Police said 28-year-old Joel Rodriguez was driving a Toyota Tacoma when he rear-ended the patrol car.

The force sent the deputy’s vehicle into the back of the Mercedes and down a dirt embankment into a fence.

Emergency personnel responded and transported the deputy to the hospital with moderate injuries. Rodriguez and the driver of the Dodge also sustained unspecified injuries.

Officers arrested Rodriguez and booked him into the Sonoma County jail on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury.
