Child Killed in Crash After Driver Runs Red Light in Somerton

Somerton, Arizona: A child died, and several others were hospitalized after a driver ran a red light and caused a collision Friday evening at an intersection in Somerton.

According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place around 7:45 p.m. on S. Somerton Avenue at W. County 14th Street.

Deputies said a white Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound on Somerton when a Nissan Rouge driving westbound on County 14th ran a red light and hit the driver’s side of the Elantra.

The Elantra overturned onto its roof.

A child in the Elantra was ejected from the vehicle and killed.

The other occupants in the Elantra were hospitalized at Yuma Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Details about whether the occupants of the Nissan were injured were not given. It was also not clear if the driver was cited or arrested.
