CHP: Man Outside Disabled Car Hit, Killed by Drunken Driver in Vista

Vista, California: A man died when a suspected DUI driver hit him and his disabled car Sunday morning in Vista, the California Highway Patrol said.

22-year-old Isabella Herrera of Oceanside was arrested by CHP officers following the collision.

According to police, a Chevrolet HHR got disabled in the center median, and its driver, only identified as a man, got out to possibly change a tire.

Herrera was driving a Buick Verando in the fast lane and crashed into the man and his Chevy.

The incident occurred at around 10:20 a.m. on eastbound Highway 78 near Emerald Drive.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics transported Herrera to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

CHP officers later arrested her on suspicion that she was intoxicated when the accident occurred. She is expected to answer gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving charges.

Investigators closed two lanes of the highway for about three hours following the accident.
