CHP Report: 68 Killed in Crashes on July 4th Maximum Enforcement Period

California – At least 68 people died in traffic-related incidents during the Fourth of July weekend in California.

The California Highway Patrol says the fatalities occurred during the Maximum Enforcement Period, which started at 6:01 Friday evening and ended at 11:59 p.m. on July 4th. More than half of those who died in the crash were not wearing seatbelts.

At least 9,700 citations were issued to speeding drivers and at least 1,224 DUI-related arrests were made, according to the report.

The agency is “concerned’ with the results of the enforcement period, which is characterized by increased law enforcement officers looking out for drunk or speeding drivers.

CHP performs at least six MEPs annually, aiming to reduce fatalities and make California roadways safer during the long holiday weekends. The next MEP is scheduled for Labor Day weekend in September.

Sacramento County, California: Two people were seriously injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Thursday afternoon at an intersection in Antelope.

According to the Sacramento Metro Fire District, the accident occurred around 1:50 p.m. at Antelope and Roseville roads.

Three vehicles collided, trapping two occupants in the wreckage.

Firefighters responded to the scene and freed the victims. The patients were taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision.

Kenneth Joseph McLeod Killed in Irvine Motorcycle Accident

Irvine, California: 65-year-old Kenneth Joseph McLeod died after he collided with a car while riding a motorcycle Wednesday afternoon at an intersection in Irvine.

The accident was reported around 4:50 p.m. at Alton Parkway and Foster.

Investigators said McLeod was riding a motorcycle southbound on Alton when he ran a red light at Foster and crashed into a Tesla turning left from northbound Alton onto westbound Foster.

The Tesla had a green light at the time of the crash.

McLeod died at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Victorville, California: A woman riding a motorized wheelchair was injured when she was hit by a car Thursday morning at an intersection in Victorville.

The accident was reported around 8:48 a.m. at Roy Rogers Drive and Amargosa Road.

Victorville police, firefighters, and AMR responded to the scene.

The victim was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

A man driving a black Nissan was found at the scene but it was not clear if he was the driver involved in the accident.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
