CHP Report: 68 Killed in Crashes on July 4th Maximum Enforcement Period

California – At least 68 people died in traffic-related incidents during the Fourth of July weekend in California.

The California Highway Patrol says the fatalities occurred during the Maximum Enforcement Period, which started at 6:01 Friday evening and ended at 11:59 p.m. on July 4th. More than half of those who died in the crash were not wearing seatbelts.

At least 9,700 citations were issued to speeding drivers and at least 1,224 DUI-related arrests were made, according to the report.

The agency is “concerned’ with the results of the enforcement period, which is characterized by increased law enforcement officers looking out for drunk or speeding drivers.

CHP performs at least six MEPs annually, aiming to reduce fatalities and make California roadways safer during the long holiday weekends. The next MEP is scheduled for Labor Day weekend in September.
