Man Hospitalized After San Mateo Construction Accident on 300 West 41st Avenue
Construction Worker in Critical Condition After Trench Collapses in San Mateo
San Mateo, California: A construction worker was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday morning after a trench he was working collapsed in San Mateo, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on a private property of a residence in the 300 block of West 41st Avenue.
A construction team was on the property working on sewer lines.
The trench collapsed and dirt buried a man in his 30s in at least 10 feet of dirt.
Rescue crews had to use special equipment to extract the victim. It took them about an hour to complete the assignment due to the risky nature of the activity.
The man appeared to be in critical condition when he was removed from the rubble.
41st Avenue was initially shut down from Hacienda Street to Alameda de la Pulgas to allow an air ambulance to land and airlift the victim to the hospital. However, foggy weather hindered air transport and the patient was taken to the hospital via ground ambulance.
