Irwin Twist Dies After Crash at Avenue C and County 14th Street
Yuma, Arizona – 75-year-old Irwin Twist, a Cocopah Tribe Councilman, was killed following a DUI collision on Friday night in Yuma, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred at Avenue C and County 14th Street at about 9:00 p.m. on June 21.
Police said an alleged DUI driver was heading south on Avenue C in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma when he ran a posted blinking sign at the junction and slammed into a 2015 Ford F-150 heading southbound.
The Ford driver and two passengers were taken to the Yuma Medical Center (YRMC) by Rural Metro. Twist, a Somerton resident died at the hospital.
The Toyota driver and a passenger sustained severe injuries and were rushed to YRMC. The driver was later flown to a Phoenix hospital for further treatment.
Officials believed the Tacoma driver was impaired at the time. Police said they would press charges against the driver once he is discharged from the hospital.
