Cyclist in Critical Condition after Being Hit by Van, Santa Rosa Police Says
Santa Rosa, California: A bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit by a van Wednesday morning at an intersection in Santa Rosa.
The Santa Rosa Police Department said the accident occurred around 7:35 a.m. at Guerneville Road and Herbert Street.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene and found a male bicyclist down in the roadway, in front of a blue Chevy Astro van.
The cyclist was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Investigators questioned the van driver and witnesses and determined that, prior to crash, the van was heading westbound on Guerneville Road in the No. 2 lane. As the van passed through the intersection with Herbert Street on a green light, the cyclist moved into oncoming traffic while riding eastbound and got hit by the van. The van driver had attempted to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful.
Speed and impairment on the part of the driver were not considered contributing factors.
Officers are trying to determine why the victim entered the roadway into traffic.
Westbound Guerneville Road at Herbert Street was closed for several hours following the accident.
