Driver Dies Days After Crashing into Jackknifed Van Pulling Trailer on SR-371 in Cahuila

Riverside County, California: A 72-year-old man died days after his car collided with a jackknifed van pulling a travel trailer last week in Cahuila.

On July 18 at about 9:42 p.m., authorities received reports of a 2019 Ford Transit van towing a 2003 Carso Fun Runner travel trailer blocking State Route 371 north of Cahuila Creek Bridge.

Shortly after, at about 9:57 p.m., authorities received another call about a crash involving the van and another car.

When authorities responded to the scene, they found out that a 72-year-old Orange County man was driving a 2024 Toyota Camry southbound at about 45-55 mph when he failed to see the stalled vehicle and crashed head-on into the trailer’s left rear corner.

The Orange County man was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in critical condition.  He later died on Tuesday, July 23, at about 8:40 p.m. while receiving treatment at the facility.

A 66-year-old female passenger in the Camry was taken to Inland Valley Hospital Wildomar with minor injuries.

No other person was hurt in the crash.

The collision is under investigation by the CHP Temecula Area Office.
