Peter Binz Killed, Jonathan Petty Arrested After Clovis Bicycle Accident
DUI Suspect Arrested After Fatally Hitting Bicyclist in Clovis
Clovis, California: 33-year-old Peter Binz died after he was hit while riding his bicycle Wednesday evening near Clovis.
Jonathan Petty was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail following the crash.
At around 7 p.m., Binz was riding a bicycle west on Herndon Avenue, west of Langley Avenue, while Petty was driving a car in the same direction while under the influence.
Police said Petty failed to negotiate a straight path and hit the bicyclist from the back.
Binz was thrown from the bike, sustaining fatal injuries.
Petty did not stop after the crash but drove to his home, which is located on North Locan Avenue near East Paul Avenue, about a mile and a half from the scene.
An uninvolved family member called 911 to report the incident and Petty’s whereabouts.
Police responded to the residence and arrested the driver.
The suspect was booked into the Fresno County Jail for driving under the influence, hit and run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Court records show Petty had a previous DUI conviction in August 2022. He pleaded no contest to charges of driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or more. The court ordered him to attend an alcohol program, and was sentenced to three years probation.
