Fetus Killed in Multi-Vehicle Pileup in Fresno County

Fresno County, California: A fetus died in a three-vehicle collision that happened Friday morning on 5 Freeway near Coalinga.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the pileup took place around 10 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway south of Highway 145.

A 2023 Hyundai Elantra, a 2022 Subaru Forester, and a 2017 GMC Yukon were involved in the collision.

CHP said a separate collision had happened earlier and the drivers of the Subaru and GMC had slowed and stopped as they approached the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was traveling southbound on the freeway at about 70 mph, approaching the Subaru and the GMC. The Hyundai driver did not notice the traffic ahead of him was stopped.

The Hyundai’s front crashed into the back of the Subaru, pushing it forward into the rear of the GMC.

A pregnant woman in the Subaru was airlifted by Sky Life to Community Regional Medical Center with facial trauma and possible concussion. Upon examination at the hospital, it was discovered that the woman’s fetus had suffered fatal injuries and died.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash but said impairment did not appear to be a factor.
