Francisco Ruiz Coronado Dies After Phoenix Crash on Interstate 17 near Northern Avenue
Phoenix, Arizona – The Phoenix Police Department has identified 28-year-old Francisco J. Ruiz Coronado as one of two individuals killed following a traffic collision early Sunday morning in Phoenix.
The deadly crash occurred at around 1:00 a.m. July 7, on Interstate 17 near Northern Avenue.
As per the police report, troopers were investigating a possible DUI motorist who had halted in the lanes of I-17 when a Kia Optima and a Hyundai Sonata crashed in the backup.
The two drivers and a Kia passenger alighted their vehicles to assess the damage caused by the crash. A black Ford Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed then crashed into the vehicles and struck the three pedestrians.
The Hyundai driver, Coronado was declared dead at the crash site.
The Kia driver, a 17-year-old boy from Glendale was rushed to a local hospital where he died.
Two persons were inside the Kia at the time of the crash. The three sustained minor injuries due to the collision.
The Ford driver, 28-year-old Michael Gibson tried to flee but he was later arrested. He was charged with assault, reckless manslaughter, and endangerment.
One Ford passenger left the crash site after the accident but two others stayed at the scene and were treated for their injuries.
