46-Year-Old Jose Hernandez Killed in Bakersfield Crash on South Sterling Road
Man and Horse Die After Colliding with Truck in Bakersfield
Bakersfield, California: The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died after colliding with a truck while riding a horse in Bakersfield as Jose Gelacio Mondragon Hernandez, 46, of Bakersfield.
The accident took place around 11:35 p.m. on March 16 near South Sterling Road and Alto Place.
Authorities said a man was driving a pickup truck south in the 1300 block of South Sterling Street when the vehicle hit a man riding a horse in the southbound lane.
Bakersfield police responded to the scene and found the man and the horse in the roadway.
Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The horse was suffering from major injuries. Due to the extent of the injuries, the horse’s obvious suffering, and the extended response time of a veterinarian, officers decided the best action was to euthanize the animal at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
