Man Killed in Jefferson Bicycle Accident Identified

Jefferson, Oregon: 42-year-old Harley Auten of Jefferson was the cyclist who died after being struck by a car Saturday at an intersection in Jefferson.

According to the Oregon State Police, Auten was involved in the crash at around 7:05 p.m. on Highway 164 at Southeast Talbot Road.

Officers said the cyclist was riding southbound in the bike lane, and as he crossed the intersection with Southeast Talbot Road, he was hit by a Dodge Ram 3500 turning south onto the highway from eastbound Talbot.

Auten died at Salem Hospital, where he had been taken for treatment.

Authorities said the driver of the Dodge, Brian Hammons, 55, of Jefferson, left the crash scene after paramedics arrived but before law enforcement responded.

He later turned himself in the following day. He was being held at the Marion County Jail for hit-and-run and criminally negligent homicide.

Authorities are investigating the collision.
