San Jose, California: A 22-year-old San Jose man died after his car collided with a big rig while he was traveling the wrong direction Friday morning on Highway 101 in San Jose.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred just after 11:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Blossom Hill Road.

Investigators said the San Jose man was driving a Honda sedan when he entered the southbound lanes of the highway at Blossom Hill Road and started driving northbound.

The driver of a southbound big rig swerved to avoid colliding with the sedan but was not successful.

The vehicles collided, causing the sedan to spin out, coming to a rest on the center divider. The big rig stopped blocking the two left lanes.

The Honda driver was ejected in the crash. Responding Santa Clara County medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene around 11:31 a.m.

The big rig driver was not hurt.

Authorities said the big rig acquired extensive damage to the truck portion, causing diesel to spill.

The left two lanes of the highway were closed for an extended period during the investigation and as crews cleaned the spilled fuel.
