Man Killed, Toddler Injured in Fiery Wrong-Way Crash on I-8 in El Cajon

El Cajon, California: A wrong-way driver died, and a toddler was seriously injured in a fiery collision that happened Sunday evening in El Cajon, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident was reported around 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 8 near Second Street.

CHP said a man driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east in the westbound lanes of the freeway near El Cajon Valley High School when he veered to the right off the roadway and hit a concrete guardrail wall.

The pickup then traversed a center median and struck another barrier on the west side of Second Street. That impact sent chunks of broken-off concrete into several other cars. A 17-month-old toddler in one of the vehicles sustained major injuries in the accident. The child was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The pickup truck caught fire and became fully engulfed. The man driving the vehicle died in the crash.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
