Man Riding Mobility Scooter Hit, Killed by DUI Driver in Tucson

Tucson, Arizona: 77-year-old Kenneth Michael Van Buren died after being struck by a DUI suspect while riding a mobility scooter Sunday morning at an intersection in Tucson.

Authorities said the accident was reported just before 6 a.m. at South 12th Avenue and West Michigan Drive.

According to police, Van Buren was riding a mobility scooter northbound in the southbound lanes of 12th Avenue, on the west side of the roadway, when a Nissan Altima driven by 22-year-old Jorge Elfido Reyes Fajardo hit him.

Farjado was traveling northbound and drove left of center across South 12th Avenue when he struck Van Buren, then hit a light pole.

Farjado left the scene after the crash.

First responders tried to resuscitate Van Buren, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Farjado returned to the scene later and was detained.

The driver was uninjured in the crash, and police said he was impaired and his license was suspended for prior driving incidents.

He faces several felony charges, including second-degree murder and felony DUI. The suspect was detained at the Pima County Jail.
