Man, Unborn Child, and Dog Killed in Yuba City Crash

Yuba City, California: The California Highway Patrol said a man, an unborn child, and a dog died in a Wednesday morning multi-vehicle collision that happened on Highway 20 in Yuba City.

The deadly crash was reported at around 8:30 a.m. on Highway 20 near the Wadsworth Canal Bridge.

According to CHP, a 30-year-old man from Clearlake was driving a white 2016 Nissan Versa eastbound, approaching the Wadsworth Canal Bridge.

A 23-year-old pregnant woman from Marysville was a passenger in the car, and a large brown dog was in the back seat of the Nissan.

On the westbound side of the highway was a black 2017 Chevy Tahoe driven by 45-year-old Nikki Hu of Yuba City, and a 2011 Ford F-150 towing a dump trailer was driving behind the Chevy with 48-year-old Joel Mendoza from Yuba City behind the wheel.

Both vehicles were also approaching the same bridge.

Authorities said for an unknown reason, the Clearlake man allowed his car to drift across the double yellow lines and into the westbound side.

The Nissan collided with the Chevy.

Mendoza was unable to stop in time, and his Ford crashed into the Chevy.

The Nissan sustained severe damage, trapping the driver and his pregnant female passenger inside.

Firefighters responded and freed the victims.

A Calstar Helicopter landed near the scene and airlifted the driver of the Nissan to Sutter Roseville Hospital. He later died from his injuries while being treated.

The pregnant woman was taken to Adventist Health/Rideout Hospital, where she immediately underwent surgery. Her unborn child did not survive and was declared dead. The woman remained in an unknown condition.

Hu was also taken to Adventist Health/Rideout Hospital with minor injuries.

The report said the occupants of the Ford were not injured.

The dog was taken by Sutter County Animal Control to Northpointe Animal Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Authorities were yet to identify the cause of the collision.
