Rider Killed in San Rafael Bicycle Accident on Andersen Drive

San Rafael, California: A bicyclist died after he was run over by a pickup truck last week on Andersen Drive in San Rafael, the San Rafael Police Department said.

The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. on December 2 at the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (S.M.A.R.T.) railroad grade crossing near Francisco Boulevard West.

SRPD officers, San Rafael Fire Department firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene after receiving 911 calls about a bicycle versus vehicle collision.

The responders found a male bicyclist and attended to the victim and determined he was dead.

The roadway and railroad services were shut down for about seven hours to allow officers to investigate the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that the cyclist was traveling northbound on Andersen and approached the S.M.A.R.T railroad grade crossing. The rider appeared to have drove over the tracks, fell onto the pavement, and into the path of a northbound pickup truck towing a trailer.

The pickup truck ran over the bicyclist.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with investigators.

SRPD is investigating the collision with the help of Marin County Coroner’s Office, and S.M.A.R.T. officials.
