Speeding Driver Causes Fatal Multi-Car Crash in Mesa

Mesa, Arizona: 23-year-old Karen Maldonado died in a chain-reaction collision that happened Wednesday afternoon in Mesa, authorities said.

Police said the driver of a Ford pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed on Southern Avenue when he hit a curb near Stapley Drive.

The truck then sideswiped a silver Chevy and rear-ended Maldonado’s silver Mazda sedan, stopped for a red light at Stapley.

The impact sent the Mazda and the truck into the intersection, where they collided with other vehicles, including a Mesa Public Schools school bus.

Maldonado died from her injuries at the scene.

A boy on board the bus was not injured.

The truck driver was hospitalized in an unknown condition.

Authorities said the driver was not impaired, but he may face charges.

The crash left the intersection closed for several hours during an investigation.
