Ventura County, California: A Ventura County sheriff’s K9 unit was involved in a suspected DUI accident Saturday evening on Pacific Coast Highway approximately midway between Malibu and Oxnard, authorities said.

The accident happened around 8:40 p.m. near Deer Creek Road.

The California Highway Patrol said a driver of a white Mercedes sedan was speeding, traveling into oncoming traffic, just before a collision involving the sheriff’s SUV.

The sheriff’s car went over the side of the road and onto rocks next to the ocean after the first impact. The vehicle was occupied by the deputy and a dog.

The driver of the other car was trapped inside the badly damaged vehicle, which was facing southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway.

Firefighters responded to the scene and extricated the motorist.

Both the deputy and the Mercedes driver were taken to the hospital. The deputy sustained minor injuries. The condition of the other driver remained unknown.

Authorities said the dog was okay.

Investigators believed the sedan driver was impaired during the collision. It was unclear if the suspect was arrested.
