Melissa King Hit and Killed by Car at South Wilmot Road and East 34th Street
Woman Killed in Tucson Bicycle Accident Identified
Tucson, Arizona: 43-year-old Melissa Marie King died after she was hit by a car Sunday night as she rode a bicycle in Tucson.
Tucson police said the accident happened around 9 p.m. at South Wilmot Road and East 34th Street.
Investigators said King was riding her bicycle southbound in the northbound lanes of Wilmot, between the middle and curb lanes.
The driver of a car traveling northbound in the curb lane saw King ahead and began braking.
The driver of a 2003 Toyota Avalon was driving behind the first car and also started braking and maneuvered left into the middle lane to avoid hitting the car in front.
As the Toyota moved to the middle lane, King also moved into the middle lane to avoid being hit by the first car and subsequently collided with the Toyota.
The cyclist died in the crash.
Police said riding against traffic on the right side of the roadway by the woman was the major contributing factor.
The Toyota driver, a 31-year-old man, stopped and remained at the scene.
