Zara Rutherford to become the youngest pilot in the world

Published

on

Zara Rutherford, a teenage pilot, said that it was tough than she expected on Thursday after completing a solo, round-the-world flight to set a new world record. The 19-year-old landed in front of a mob of media, well-wishers, and relatives at an airstrip outside of the Belgian town of Kortrijk, claiming to be the world’s youngest woman to fly solo around the globe. On the 18th of August, 2021, she embarked.

She said during a press conference that it is weird to be back here after an incredible voyage. The Belgian-British teenager, had an epic journey of five months with stops in nearly 30 countries. She was looking forward to putting her feet up in just one spot for a time. “Next week, I’d prefer to do nothing,” she joked.

Rutherford is a dual citizen of Belgium and the United Kingdom. She answered questions in English, French, and Dutch. Her parents are pilots, and her father served in the Royal Air Force.

Previously, the youngest woman to fly solo around the world was American Shaesta Waiz, who was 30 at the time of her challenge in 2017. The youngest male record holder was 18.

The “scariest” portion of her trek, she continued, was Russia’s vast, an icy region of Siberia. It is a location of the overwhelming distance between habitations and temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit).

“I’d be driving hundreds of kilometers without seeing anything human — no electrical wires, no roads, no people. I’d think to myself, ‘If the engine stopped now, I’d have a pretty huge issue,'” she explained.

She had to avoid clouds and couldn’t fly at night while navigating the world in a 325-kilogram (717-pound) Shark UL single-propeller plane that gets given to her under a sponsorship contract. Because of the limitations, she had to divert or make emergency landings many times. This included taking to the ground early this month, only a short way from Dubai, to escape getting caught in the city’s first thunderstorm in two years.

She also spent most of November in Ayan, a Russian eastern coastal town. She could not leave the place due to bad weather, relying on kind people who were “quite prepared to help with everything I could need.”

Mauritius oil spill case sees captain receive 20 months in prison

The grounding of the MW Wakashio caused, on July 25, 2020, the worst oil spill ever on the coast of Mauritius. The captain and his mate were sentenced to 20 months in prison on Monday, December 27. “The court took into consideration the fact that the two defendants pleaded guilty and apologized,” said Judge Ida Dookhy Rambarrun.

The Japanese bulk carrier ran aground on a coral reef in the south-eastern part of Mauritius, releasing more than 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil into its crystal-clear waters. Indian captain Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar admitted during the hearing that he had been drinking at a party hosted on the ship. He was found guilty, along with his second Sri Lankan Hitihanillage Subhoda Janendra Tilakaratna, of “endangering the safety of navigation” by a court in Port Louis.

The captain had consumed alcohol “in moderation”

The MW Wakashio, under the Panamanian flag, was en route from Singapore to Brazil, with 3,800 tonnes of fuel oil and 200 tonnes of diesel on board, which quickly began to leak, but the majority of which could be pumped out. “A birthday party had taken place on board and I had consumed alcohol in moderation,” said the captain during his trial, adding that he had given instructions to approach Mauritian waters in order to capture the telephone network , to allow crew members to contact their families. “The sea was bad but the visibility was clear and it was safe to navigate. At one point, the vessel could not move and had touched the seabed. As I had had a few drinks, it didn’t seem useful to intervene and it didn’t occur to me that we were sailing so close, “he added.

This oil spill was the worst marine pollution in the history of the country which depends on its waters for its food security and for ecotourism, in an area which is among the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. The south-eastern coast of Mauritius has two classified sites: Blue Bay, known for its corals, and Pointe d’Esny, rich in mangroves, crucial ecosystems in the face of global warming. From the first days, the inhabitants mobilized, working tirelessly with makeshift resources, to contain the pollution. In the months that followed, thousands of people protested on the island, criticizing in particular the government’s handling of the oil spill.

Orelsan accused of racism in song

Published

Since the Mongols have become experts / Surrounded by Mongols, the Mongol Empire / We make the Mongols to please the Mongols “. Orelsan, crowned with the success of his latest album, is the target of a petition calling for the term to be banned. In “The Odor of the Essence”, the Norman rapper repeatedly used this expression considered racist and degrading. According to the association Routes Nomades, echoed by Le Parisien on Thursday 23 December, “the use of the term ‘Mongolian’ in this way is not only insulting, but also undermines Mongolian identity and trivializes the disrespect for human dignity ”.

The petition, posted on the Change.org platform, has been signed nearly 13,000 times. In his song, Orelsan does not use this term to insult a whole people. However, this term “Mongolian” is associated in everyday language with an insult to people with Down’s syndrome and, more broadly, to people who are considered stupid. “If the meaning of the song here refers to an idiotic person, and does not refer to people of Mongolian nationality or origin (from Mongolia), its use remains racist and discriminatory,” insists the association. Objective of Nomadic Routes: to abolish the offensive connotation of this famous term.

“I am not evil incarnate”

To support its denunciation, the petition intends to mobilize the signatories of the text to boycott Orelsan. It is notably a question of publicly condemning the text of “L’Odeur de l’essence” but also of putting pressure on the media so that they no longer broadcast the artist on their antennas. This controversy comes on top of other casseroles the main party has been subjected to. The Alençon native sparked heated controversy in 2009 after the release of his radical track “Sale Pute” and “Saint-Valentin”, two titles in which he utters violent words against an ex. “It was taken out of context and reduced to misogyny, yet I’m not a misogynist. I am not evil incarnate “, he had reacted at the time to L’Express, believing that he could not be” always politically correct “.
